The Jill Gregory School of Dancing which opened in September 1976, caters for all levels of interest and needs. Most pupils may not have aspirations to become professional dancers or dancing teachers, but we can help them build poise and confidence which will assist in all aspects of their lives. A number of pupils have gone on to dance professionally, study for dance/theatrical degrees/diplomas, or teach aerobics, but many more have used their dance training as an asset to their careers in school teaching and nursery nursing. We have also helped pupils with co-ordination and physical problems.
As well as giving pupils opportunities to perform, we also enter for Examinations and Medal Tests with The British Theatre Dance Association.
The British Theatre Dance Association (BTDA) was founded in 1972 as a Midland based organisation by the president Ann Oliver. It has expanded throughout the UK and in several countries abroad and is approved, along with RAD, BBO ISTD and Cecchetti, by The Council for Dance Education and Training. BTDA examinations fit into the National Qualifications Framework, which means that examinations at certain levels are considered to be equal to GCSE's, AS and A levels. We have recently seen a report that a student in another region, having not gained sufficient GCSE's to go on an A level course, was accepted when it was seen that her dance exam certificates were GCSE equivalent, unlike her friend who had the same level with another association, but didn't get a place as the dancing school which she attended was not offering exams which are recognised.
Both Jill and Dianna have choreographed for other local groups and schools, and Jill has taught at an ATD Tap weekend.
